Exciting things to do in Cape Town this Summer

Category Cape Town News

The summer holidays are just a few weeks away. Cape Town is a top destination for both South African and international tourists during this time. While sightseeing and wine tasting are very popular activities in the Mother City, if you seek the thrill of an adventure then these are the exciting things to do in Cape Town this Summer:

Paraglide over the Atlantic Ocean

Get a bird's eye view of the city with an adrenaline pumping experience of paragliding. Depending on the wind, the journey starts from Signal Hill Drive or Lions Head parking and ends at the Sea Point promenade. A qualified instructor will highlight the guidelines, clip you in securely, and you will then be attached to an expert pilot. Once you are up in the air, you can sit back and relax as you glide at a maximum of 40km. You will also have the opportunity to pilot the glide as the instructor shows you how to steer. These trips last about 30 minutes depending on the weather conditions. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and apply sunscreen before the flight.

Enjoy a helicopter ride over the Cape

Fly in the comfort of a helicopter as you get to have a spectacular elevated view of the world below. Starting at the V&A Waterfront, there is a wide range of tour options available - including helicopter tours of the Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Point, and Robben Island. There are also scenic flights, wine tours, and adventure flights to choose from. The helicopter can take up to three passengers, ensuring that you and your loved ones also share in this great experience. Do not forget your cameras as you will want to capture the best pictures from above.

Sandboard and quad-bike on the Atlantis Dunes

If you love the thrill of having the wind run through your hair as you ride down adventurous paths then exploring the Atlantis Dunes is just for you. Situated northwest of Cape Town, the Atlantis Sand Dunes boasts soft white sand dunes up to 35 meters long, and 50 meters high, which makes it ideal for those who enjoy sandboarding, quad-biking, and 4x4 handling. The Atlantis Sand Dunes is an important conservation area protecting the Atlantis Aquifer which supplies water to the Atlantis area. It is also home to various plant species and birds such as the Black Harrier.

Hike up Lion's Head

While you can hike up Lion's Head during the day, doing so just before sunset will give you the opportunity to watch the Mother City come alive as the night falls. Take in the gorgeous panoramic views of the sea, city, and mountain. Locals enjoy a climb on just about any day but take full advantage on nights that the full moon is present. Be sure to carry a torchlight and water bottles.

Live in a houseboat

Fancy spending your summer days living in a houseboat surrounded by the most extraordinary views that nature has to offer. The 40 000 hectare West Coast National Park not only provides a safe haven for seabirds but also gives visitors a great destination for relaxing and unwinding. If the water is not for you then a beach cottage or bush chalets may just be what you need to make your stay just perfect.
